Helena Crossan
continued her spectacular form this season with an excellent
second place finish in the Longford marathon on Sunday last.
The County record holder for the marathon finished in 2 hours
55 minutes and 01 seconds, just less than two minutes behind
race winner and long time leader Lucy Brennan from Sligo. Crossan
would have comfortably broken the 2.55 barrier, but for traffic
congestion in the final 200m meters. Nevertheless, the Carndonagh
based athlete can be pleased with her efforts as it was her
third marathon this year in which she ran under three hours.
Previous outings in Belfast in May and Newry in June also saw
Crossan taking second place. Eilish Bell raced to a solid 3
hours and 52 minutes for the Longford course as she prepares
for her ultra marathon debut in Connamara next April.
Meanwhile, Karen Crossan was a convincing winner of the women’s
one mile road race in Buncrana on Tuesday last. The DCU student
finished in 5.41. Declan Donaghey raced to a season’s
best of 6.29 when taking victory in the juvenile race with Moya
Doogan first in her category in 6.43. Feargal Doherty ran 6.43
for the two-lap course which started and finished in the grounds
for Scoil Mhuire. Aine Bradley raced to a best of 7.00 minutes.
In the masters’ race, Joe Mc Kinney set a personal best
of 5.04, with Seamus Mc Daid finishing strongly in 6.01. Clonmany
athlete Daniel McLaughlin led home a four member Inishowen A.C
team in the open race with a best of 5.28. Patrick Mathews was
credited with the same time just one place behind. Rodger Griffin
returned to his best form to finish in 6.17, while his brother
