
Seventeen
athletes from Inishowen A.C. competed in the Donegal 5k road championships
on Sunday last in Letterkenny. This event was also the final race
in the Donegal Grand Prix series. It was the Club’s most
successful championships to date with a total of three team and
three individual medals.
Helena Crossan led the Club’s senior women’s team
to their first ever championship medals when finishing in 18.38,
just two weeks after her tenth place finish in the World 100k.
This also gave the Carndonagh athlete first place in the V2 masters
section. Strong performances from Teresa Doherty, 21.22, Brigid
Moohan, 21.40 and Kathrina Ruddy, 21.44 secured silver medals
behind Finn Valley A.C. Kathrina also won an individual medal
when finishing third in the V1 masters section. Karen Crossan
made a return to competition with 22.15, while Catherine Mc Laughlin
and Aoife Logan finished in 24.44 and 26.12 respectively.
An eighth place finish by John Collins in a personal best of 17
minutes helped the Club’s senior men’s team to bronze
medals behind Letterkenny and Finn Valley. John was closely followed
by Dermot Sweeney, who recorded a fine 17.19 having been out of
competition for last number of months. Triathlon specialist Patrick
Mc Laughlin finished in a lifetime best of 20.08, while his brother
Shaun completed the scoring team with a 20.58 effort.
In one of the most competitive team categories in recent years,
Finbarr Gallagher led the masters to silver medals in 18.05 behind
host Club Letterkenny A.C. with Finn Valley in third. Buncrana
athlete Patrick Doherty raced to 18.21 and won a silver medal
in the V4 masters section. The masters team was completed by Willie
Mc Kinney in 19.02. Owen McKinney was comfortably under the 20-minute
barrier with a 19.47 effort, while Clive Bell was sixth in the
V4 masters category.

Fahan athlete Oliver Mc Geehan ran 25.20 in the Dromhair 4 mile
road race in Sligo.
Up-Coming Events
This Sunday 30 September sees the Mooathon half marathon take
place in in Kilmacrenan at 10.00am. The cross-country season gets
underway on Saturday 6 October with the Donegal even ages (U 10-U18)
and novice races in Killybegs at 12.00 noon. A day later, women’s
3k Road Race takes place in Letterkenny @ 11.30. The County uneven
ages (U 11-U19) and masters races are set for Sunday 14th October.
Jordanstowns Co. Antrim will be the venue for the Ulster and Northern
Ireland even ages cross-country championships on Saturday 27th
October. The action returns again to Donegal with the County senior
cross-country championships taking place on Sunday 4 November
at the Finn Valley Centre at 11.00 am. The Provincial cross-country
championships conclude on Sunday 11 November with the uneven ages
and novice races in the Finn Valley centre. Juvenile training
in Buncrana continues at the Leisure Centre every Wednesday from
7-8 pm. Juvenile training for 7-12 year olds takes place every
Thursday from 5-6 pm in Carndonagh Community School Gym. New members
are welcome to come along. Finally, training for senior athletes
takes place every Tuesday at 6.30 pm from the Buncrana Leisure
Centre also.
