| Ultra
distance running specialist Helena Crossan raced to a fine season’s
best of 83 minutes and 45 seconds when finishing second behind
Tullamore native Pauline Curley at the Larne half marathon on
Saturday last. Sligo based Fahan athlete Oliver Mc Geehan was
well pleased with his 88.10 effort as competitors battled against
strong winds throughout the 13.1 mile event. Mc Geehan will run
in the Hamburg marathon in Germany on 27 April. London bound marathon
runner Finbarr Gallagher confirmed his recent good form in training
with a very useful 89.25.
Meanwhile, on St. Patrick’s Day, five athletes from the
Club ran in the Letterkenny A.C. organized 5km road race. The
two-lap town circuit provided a host of promising performance
from Inishowen athletes as Finbarr Gallagher raced to a season’s
best of 18.12. Paddy Doherty from Buncrana secured victory in
the V4 masters section with a solid 18.15 performance. Owenie
McKinney was justly rewarded for a consistent winter of training
with an excellent personal best of 19.09. The Carndonagh athlete,
who is now based in Buncrana, followed this performance with another
lifetime best of 11.09 in the Easter Sunday 3k run in Letterkenny.
A keen competitor in duathlons, Owenie cycled to and from the
event in preparation for the summer racing season. Theresa Doherty
stopped the clock with a season’s best of 21.53, while Brigid
Mohan raced to 23.30. Also on St. Patrick’s Day, Oliver
Mc Geehan finished the Tubbercurry 10k in Sligo in 38.55.
Nine juvenile athletes from the Club competed in the Ulster &
Northern Ireland age group championships in the magnificent Magherafelt
indoor athletics arena on Saturday 15 March. Ballyliffin based
athlete Conor Collins qualified for the All-Irelands in Nenagh
on April 5th with a fine third place finish in the 400m in a personal
best of 56.4 seconds. Carndonagh athlete Declan Donaghey is also
Nenagh bound following his bronze medal winning performance in
the U 13 boys’ long jump with a best of 3.85m. Later in
the day, Declan raced in the 600m.There were promising performances
from Aine Bradley who reach the final of the U 12 60m and from
Derek Lee Doherty, Feargal Doherty (600m and long jump), Paula
Mc Laughlin (60m and long jump), and James Griffin and Enda Mc
Daid in the 1500m. Meanwhile, on the same day, Karol Doherty was
an impressive winner in the wheelchair section of the Gransha
5k in a best of 17.09. Katrina Ruddy raced to a strong finish
in 22.29.
Up-Coming Events
On Tuesday 8th April, the Club will be launching the ‘Fit
for Life’ initiative at 6.15 pm at the Buncrana Leisure
Centre. This is aimed at people over 18 years of age who wish
to start recreational walking/jogging on a regular basis. As the
name of the initiative suggests, its main aim is to help participants
enjoy the health benefits of regular aerobic exercise. People
of all abilities and fitness levels are very welcome to come along
and wear appropriate footwear and clothing for walking/jogging.
There will be on-going help and advice on training, nutrition
and other aspects of regular exercise.
