Community School and Gransha in Derry were the focus of attention
for Inishowen A.C. athletes last weekend. Sixty juvenile athletes
from across County took part in the final round of the U 10 and
U 12 sportshall athletics competition in Carndonagh Community
School on Sunday last, while five Inishowen A.C. were in action
at the Northern Ireland and Ulster intermediate, and master’s
championships in Gransha on Saturday.
The Carndonagh Community School gym was a hive of activity on
Sunday morning last, with over sixty young athletes taking part
in the final round of the County sportshall (indoor) athletics
competition. Athletes took part in a series of track and field
events which included team races, relays, obstacle relay races,
standing long jump, standing triple jump, speed bounce and medicine
ball throw.
Conditions could not have been more contrast on Saturday last
when several of the Club’s senior athletes took part in
the Northern Ireland and Ulster intermediate and master’s
championships in Gransha. Consistent heavy rain in the days leading
up to the event meant the competitors were greeted with soft and
challenging underfoot conditions for much of the afternoon. Theresa
Doherty was the first Inishowen finisher in the women’s
4km race in a very creditable 23nd position in a time of 19.01.
Brigid Moohan was just 38 seconds adrift, helping the Moville
Community College teacher to 29th overall. Katrina Ruddy finished
12th in the V1 masters section and 39th overall in 20.44. In the
masters’ men’s 8km, Owen Mc Kinney produced a confident
display to finish 76th overall in a time of 36.27. John Collins
marked his return to the cross-country scene with a strong second
half display that helped him to 37th overall in 37.44 for the
10k route.
