a fortnight after her record-breaking victory in the Connamara
ultra-marathon, Helena Crossan clinched gold in the V2 masters
section of the National 10km road race in Athenry in Co. Galway
on Sunday last. Crossan’s finishing time of 37.32 was good
enough to give her fourth woman overall in the race and augurs
well for her performance in the Belfast marathon on Monday 5 May.
Seven Inishowen A.C. athletes competed in the first race of the
Furey Insurance sponsored 5k road series at the Bay Road circuit
in Derry on Wednesday last. Eilish Bell took the top prize in
the V2 masters section with a determined run in 21.35. Clonmany
based Theresa Doherty was second overall in the senior women’s
race in an encouraging time of 21.34. Clive Bell was comfortably
under the 23-minute barrier with a good 22.46. Bell, who will
be running in the Belfast marathon on Bank Holiday Monday in May
secured fourth in the V5 masters section. Niall MC Gee ran 18
minutes and 26 seconds, while Owenie McKinney was less than 30
seconds away from his personal best with a strong 19.32 finishing
time. Shaun McLaughlin sharpened his speed for the Belfast marathon
in two weeks time with a useful 20.35 effort.
Fit for Life
On Tuesday 8th April, the Club launched the ‘Fit for Life’
initiative at the Buncrana Leisure Centre. This initiative is
aimed at people over 18 years of age who wish to start recreational
walking/jogging on a regular basis. As the name of the initiative
suggests, its main aim is to help participants enjoy the health
benefits of regular aerobic exercise. People of all abilities
and fitness levels are very welcome to come along and wear appropriate
footwear and clothing for walking/jogging. There will be on-going
help and advice on training, nutrition and other aspects of regular
exercise. The cost for registration for this initiative is €
35. This initiative continues every Tuesday evening at 6.15 pm
from the Buncrana Leisure. New members are very welcome to come
along.

Events
For many of our juvenile members, the track season will open with
the Donegal post-primary Schools’ track & field championships
on Thursday May 1st at the Aura Leisure Centre in Letterkenny.
This will be followed by the Ulster District Schools’ championships
in Antrim forum on Friday 9th May. On Saturday 10th May, the first
round of the County Club juvenile and senior track & field
championships will take place in Letterkenny at 12 noon. The County
Children’s games for U 10, U 11 and U 12 will take place
on Thursday 22nd May at the Finn Valley Centre in Stranorlar at
6.30pm. The Provincial championships for the Children’s
Games will also take place at the Finn Valley centre on Sunday
1st June at 10.00am. The second round of the County Club juvenile
and senior track & field championships will take place in
Letterkenny on Thursday 5th June at 7.00 pm.
Meanwhile on the road, the Donegal Grand Prix series will begin
on Sunday 4th May with the North West 10km in Letterkenny at 3.00pm.
A day later, Inishowen A.C. will be well represented at the Belfast
marathon with athletes involved in both the relay and the full
26.2 mile event. The Culdaff 5km run and walk will take place
on Friday 9th May at 7.30. This event will also include a 1 mile
race for juveniles age between 11 and 16 years of age. Registration
for all events is in the Wee Hall in Culdaff from 6.30pm. The
second race of the Furey Insurance 5km series will take place
on Wednesday 14th May at Lisnagalvin at 7.30pm. Juvenile training
for all age groups in Buncrana continues at the Leisure Centre
every Wednesday from 7-8 pm. Juvenile training for 8-12 year olds
on Thursday from 5-6 pm in Carndonagh Community School Gym. Training
for juveniles aged from 12-18 takes place every Tuesday from 4-5.15
pm and on Thursdays from 3.20-4.45 in Carndonagh Community School
also. Finally, training for senior athletes takes place every
Tuesday at 6.15 pm from the Buncrana Leisure Centre. New members
are welcome to come along.
