| The
playing fields of Antrim Forum were the venue for the Ulster and
Northern Ireland senior cross-country championships on Saturday
last. Helena Crossan confirmed that her preparations for the defense
of her Connamara ultra marathon title in April are well on track
with a fine tenth place finish in the women’s 8km. Meanwhile,
Nuala Bradley Patrick Mc Ginley, Stephen Friel, Kieran Devlin
and Kayla Farren all performed well on the Donegal teams that
qualified for the Ulster Sportshall finals on Friday 8 February.
A day later, Stephen Friel raced to a personal best of 8.1 seconds
over 60m at the Scottish Indoor championships. The Dunaff teenager
also posted a season’s best in the 200m. At the same championships,
Kayla Farren competed well in the U 15 800m. Farren, along with
Caroline Kelly qualified for the Ulster Schools cross-country
finals by finishing ninth and sixth respectively at the District
championships held at the University of Ulster at Coleraine on
Tuesday 5 February. Other notable performances were recorded by
Conor Hession, Enda Mc Daid, Conor Mc Cormick, Declan Farren,
and Sean Wallace in the junior boys 3000m, while Rodger Griffin
finished strongly in the intermediate boys 5000m. Juvenile training
for all age groups in Buncrana continues at the Leisure Centre
every Wednesday from 7-8 pm. Juvenile training for 8-12 year olds
on Thursday from 5-6 pm in Carndonagh Community School Gym. Training
for juveniles aged from 12-18 takes place every Tuesday from 4-5.15
pm and on Thursdays from 3.20-4.45 in Carndonagh Community School
also. Finally, training for senior athletes takes place every
Tuesday at 6.15 pm from the Buncrana Leisure Centre. New members
are welcome to come along.
