AC athlete Finbarr Gallagher raced to a solid 3 hours and 16 minutes
and 42 seconds in his first running of the London marathon on
Sunday last. The Glenties native, who has a personal best for
the distance of 3 hours and 03 minutes from Boston 2006, was part
of a field of over 35,000 athletes who raced around the streets
of London, in what has now become the biggest marathon in the
world. Other local athletes to perform well included Susan Mc
Laughlin who finished in a very impressive 5 hours and 32 minutes
and 21 seconds for her first attempt at the distance. In fact,
Susan along with Denise Gillespie who finished in 5.54.47 in London
only took up running last October and ran the event to raise money
for the Foyle Hospice. Denise’s brother Neil finished the
26.2 mile event in 5.30.58.
Elsewhere,
Galway based Moville athlete Maurice Clarke ran a season’s
best of 1 hour 23 minutes and 59 seconds in the Connamara ½
marathon on Sunday week last.
