Mc Carthy Retains Culdaff 5km Title

Declan Mc Carthy from City of Derry athletics club successfully defended his Culdaff 5km title on Friday night last with a comfortable 14 second victory ahead of Eddie Sweeney from Letterkenny A.C. Paddy Moore, also from City of Derry completed the top three by taking third place. From the early stages, Mc Carthy was to the fore, and as the field passed the 1 mile marker, the Carndonagh based accountant and opened a 5 second lead over the chasing group. It was a lead that he was never going to relinquish as Mc Carthy reached the finish line outside Culdaff post office in 16 minutes and 58 seconds. In what proved to be an exciting battle for the remaining podium positions, Eddie Sweeney clinched second in 17.12, with Paddy Moore just two seconds behind in third. Margaret Kelly was a convincing winner of the women’s race as the Malin native who now resides and runs for Letterkenny finished in 19.30. Catherine Lilburn took second in 21.28, while Inishowen A.C. athlete Theresa Doherty took third spot in a strong 22.05. Letterkenny A.C athlete Marcus Mc Clintock was first in the V1 masters section in 18.08. Other master category winners included Edel Mc Carthy (26.12) and Frank Chaney (17.15) Finn Valley in the V2 section, Gloria Donaghey (23.15) Finn Valley and Joe English (18.17) Letterkenny A.C. in the V3 section, Peter Lilburn (19.23) in the V4 section, Christy Mc Monagle (20.14), City of Derry in the V4 section and Willie John Mc Kinney (28.47) in the V5 category. Karol Doherty was first in the wheelchair section in 18.57.

Twenty five athletes took part in the juvenile 1 mile road race held before the 5km. David Lynch from City if Derry was the overall winner in 5.33. Barry Devlin was second in 5.38, with Inishowen’s Daniel Millar in third in 5.41. Inishowen A.C. scored a one-two in the U 13 girl’s race with Moya Doogan taking gold in 6.24 and Connie Ann Hession second in 6.25. Roma Doherty was third in 7.50. Kyle Davis was first boy in the U 13 category in 6.49, with Seosamh Gallanagh second in 6.52. Derek Lee Doherty from Inishowen A.C. took third in 7.07. Aoife Bell also from Inishowen A.C. took the U 15 girls’ title in 7.16. David Lynch was first in the U 15 category, with Darren Malarkey second in 6.08. Michael took third in 6.57. Kayla Farren ensured Inishowen Athletics Club’s third age group victory of the evening when she was a convincing winner of the U 17 girls’ category in 6.09. Vickey Henderson was second in 9.39. Barry Devlin was first in the U 17 boys’ age group in 5.38, with Inishowen A.C. athlete Danile Millar second in 5.41. James Griffin also from Inishowen A.C. completed the top three, finishing in 5.43.
