Malin based
athlete Joe Mc Kinney continued his recent good form on the
local circuit with a second place finish in the Clonmany 5km
road race on Friday evening last. Mc Kinney raced to a time
of 17 minutes and 25 seconds, just 21 seconds behind overall
race winner Pauric O’ Donnell from Letterkenny Athletics
Club. The Letterkenny athlete was a popular winner as he crossed
the line to claim the Joe Farrell Memorial Cup in 17 minutes
and 04 seconds. Tom Thompson from Finn Valley A.C. was third
overall in 17.37. Judy Graham from Abbey Athletics Club in Antrim
was an equally impressive winner of the women’s race in
a time of 18.41, which placed her eighth overall in a record
entry field of 49 runners. Inishowen A.C.’s Elizabeth
Mc Daid was second in 23 minutes, with Cathy Mc Dermott third
in 23.52. Other Inishowen A.C. runners included Peter McKinney
on 21.04, Seamus McDaid on 21.05, and Mickey Donaghey finishing
in 22.09. In the juvenile 1 mile race which was run in conjunction
with 5km, local athletes Stephen Friel and Daniel McLaughlin
had a close contest, with Friel proving slightly stronger in
the closing stages to claim a one second victory in 5.38. Connie-Ann
Hession was the top female finisher when taking gold in the
U 13 girls’ race in 6.46. Georgie Kelly took gold in the
U 13 boys section in 6.07 with Inishowen A.C. athlete Declan
Donaghey second in 6.34. Other Inishowen A.C. runners included
Niall Devlin 6.01, Feargal Doherty 6.55 and James Griffin running
7.12.

Letterkenny was the venue on Sunday last for the fourth running
of the Danny Mc Daid 15km road race. Ninety four runners completed
the 9.3 mile event, with Joe McKinney leading the Inishowen
A.C. team home with a strong fourteenth place finish in a personal
best of 57.55. Niall McGee finished fifteenth in 58.05, while
Helena Crossan was a convincing winner of the V2 masters section
in 59.25 for twentieth overall. Brigid Moohan raced to a fine
second place finish in the senior women’s category in
a best of 72.59. Finbarr Gallagher finished in twenty second
place in 60.25. Earlier in the week, the Glenties native ran
a season’s best of 17.33 in the Killybegs 5km road race.
Buncrana based athlete Owenie McKinney raced to a personal best
of 68.01 for the 15km, while Vinnie Hegarty finished fiftieth
in 68.25. Benny Barber battled well to reach the finish on the
track at the Aura Leisure Centre in 73 minutes and 46 seconds.

The twenty first race in the Brian Mc Cormick Sports Donegal
Grand Prix series will take place this Friday 15th August with
the Milford 5km road race at 7.30 pm. City of Derry Athletics
Club is holding a 1 mile road race on Tuesday 19th August at
the Buncrana Leisure Centre at 7 pm. A week later they will
host the very popular Dessie’s 5 mile road race in Derry.
Training for Inishowen Athletics Club Fit for Life walking and
jigging group and senior athletes takes place every Tuesday
evening at 6.30 pm from Buncrana Leisure Centre. New members
are very welcome to come along.
