Fintra
beach on the outskirts of Killybegs was the picturesque setting
for the County even ages cross-country championships on Saturday
last. A total of 29 athletes from Inishowen Athletics Club competed
across a range of juvenile and novice races.
Brigid Moohan got the Club on the podium in the novice women’s
race when she finished strongly in taking second place. Eilish
Bell ran a composed race and was just out of the medals when finishing
fourth over the 4k course. In the juvenile races, Emma Doherty
from Moville and Deirdre Doherty from Buncrana raced well in a
very competitive U 10 600m. Oisin Hession from Clonmany led the
boys U 10 team to bronze medals. He was strongly supported by
Fergus Cox, Darragh Kelly and Ethan O’ Kane. Other team
members to race well were Matthew Cavanagh, Tony Morrison, Conal
Doogan and Jordan Sinkins. In the boys U 12 race, Derek Lee Doherty
came through strongly to finish in twentieth position with Declan
Donaghy just two places behind. He was closely followed by Gavin
McLaughlin. Moya Doogan, Connie Ann Hession, Grainne Hession,
Paula Mc Laughlin, Kate Doherty and Susie Hegarty recorded strong
performances to finish fourth in the girls U 12 team section.
Buncrana athlete Patrick Mulholland ran a well-paced effort in
the U 14 boys’ race and was closely followed by Declan Farran.
Stephen Friel finished an excellent third in the U 16 boys 3k
race and led the team of Stephen Devlin, Enda McDaid, James Griffin,
and Rodger Griffin to silver medals. Kayla Farran from Ballyliffin
was just seconds away from a bronze medal in the girls’
U 16 2k event, but can be very encouraged by her performance as
she is in the same age group next year also. A special word of
thanks to all the parents who traveled to Killybegs on Saturday
and helped out at the event.
