AC juvenile athletes won an impressive total of 8 medals at the
‘B’ All-Ireland cross-country championships held at
the Finn Valley Centre on Sunday last. Heavy falls of snow in
the previous 24 hours, and persistent rain throughout the afternoon
presented challenging underfoot condition for all competitors.
Aine
Bradley was first in action in the U 11 girls 800m. The Clonmany
athlete raced to a very creditable 21st position overall. She
was the sixth scorer on the Donegal team that won the overall
inter-county title. Moville athlete Alannah Furlong finished strongly
in the U 13 girls 1000m taking 42nd place. In the U 13 boys’
1200m race, Delcan Farran from Malin was the fourth scorer on
the County team by finishing impressively in 22nd position. Donegal
took the team title ahead of Sligo. Declan Donaghey was unlucky
to lose his shoe in the early stages of the race, but will no
doubt be in contention in the years ahead. Kayla Farran was in
contention for a podium finish for much of the U 15 girls’
1500m. The Ballyliffin athlete girl battled well in the closing
stages to finish in eight position and was the fourth finisher
on the Donegal team that took the team title ahead of Cork. Stephen
Friel raced strongly to a fine sixth place finish in the U 15
boys 2000m. He was closely followed by impressive performances
from Enda Mc Daid in 20th and Daniel Millar in 26th. All three
athletes were on the County team that finished third behind gold
medalist Cork and Cavan who won the silver medals. Rodger Griffin
put in a battling performance in the U 17 boys 4000m and will
have gained much from the experience.
