Inishowen Athletics Cub athletes recorded two highly creditable
victories in the past week. Carndonagh athlete Helena Crossan
won the inaugural Newry City marathon on Monday week last, while
juvenile duo Fergus Cox from Buncrana and Darragh Kelly from Moville
combined to win the team event in the ball throw at the Ulster
and Northern Ireland Children’s Games at the Finn Valley
Centre Stranorlar, on Sunday last.
Helena Crossan was a convincing 23 minute winner of the Newry
City marathon. The World 100k medalist ran the first half of the
hilly Co. Down course at a steady pace. From 15 miles onwards,
Crossan increased her tempo to move through the field effortlessly
and reach the finish line 2 hours and 56 minutes and 06 seconds.
This was the second time within a month that Crossan achieved
a podium finish in the marathon as she clinched the silver medal
position in the Belfast marathon just 21 days earlier behind Ethiopian
favourite Marashet Jumma.
Darragh Kelly and Fergus Cox finished first and second respectively
in the U 11 boys ball throw. The longest throws of both athletes
were then combined to give them an historic team victory and secure
qualification for the All-Ireland finals in Tullamore, Co. Offlay
on 14 June. This was Fergus Cox’s second gold medal in as
many years as he combined with Conal Doogan in the U 10 boys’
long jump last year. The ball throw victory represented a successful
and enjoyable day for Inishowen A.C. juveniles as they competed
in glorious sunshine in a range of track and field event throughout
the day. The full team included Zoe McDaid 300m & long jump,
Conal Doogan 60m & long jump, Darren Donaghey 60m & ball
throw, Nathan Harkin 60m & ball throw, Emma Doherty 80m &
