The annual Culdaff 5km and juvenile 1 mile road races will take place this Friday 14th May. The 1 mile race for boys and girls aged from 11-19 years of age gets underway at 7.30pm. There will be age group category prizes for the first three at under 13, 15, 17 and 19, with all finishers receiving a goody bag. The 5km race for all runners and walkers will start at 7.45. There will be the usual age group category prizes. As with the junior race, all finishers will receive a goody bag for their efforts. Refreshments and prizes-giving will take place in the Wee Hall after the race. Registration is in the Wee Hall in Culdaff from 6.30pm. A record field of over 140 athletes took part last year and race organizers are hopeful of an even bigger turnout on Friday. All levels of walkers and runners are welcome to come along.
Illies Golden Glove Boxing Club held their first annul 4 mile road race in Buncrana on Sunday last. Inishowen was prominent in both the women’s and men’s categories. It was a Club clean sweep in the women’s section with Helena Crossan taking first place in 24.56, placing the Carndonagh runner seventh overall. Teresa Doherty was second running a swift 26.12, with Elizabeth Mc Daid battling well to finish third in 28.04. Breege Collins and Georgina Dixon finished in 31.14 and 34.00 minutes respectively. Paddy Doherty showed that he is returning to top form with a well deserved third place finish in the men’s race in 24.13. Race winner was Charlie Gallagher from Finn Valley A.C. in 22.27. Erin Ramsey from Donegal Town placed second in 22.35. Other Inishowen Athletics Club athletes to compete were Mickey Donaghy 26.30, Michael Collins26.37, Eddie Noone 27.51, Seamus McDaid 28.17 and Brendan Duffy 31.42.
James Browne was in impressive form at the Ballyshannon 5km on Friday last, running a personal best of 16 minutes and 12 seconds. This placed the St. Johnston man 5th overall and second in the masters men 35 section. Helena Crossan retained her speed at the 5km distance, finishing second woman overall in 18.15 and winning the masters’ women section in the process. Susan Mc Grath broke new territory by setting a lifetime best of 23 minutes and 26 seconds.
Lee Mc Laughlin was the top Inishowen performer at the County Children’s Games on Thursday evening last winning the under 10 60m in convincing style and clinching third in the ball throw. Pat Loughery was showed a gritty display in the under 11 boys 600m, taking second place overall. Darren Donaghy placed fifth in the 600m and was also a finalist in the 60m along with Pat. Luke Clifford competed well in the under 10 long jump and 60m sprint. Una Cox and Eadaoin O’ Raw had a busy evening at the Finn Valley Centre in Stranorlar, taking part in the under 10 long jump, ball throw and 500m.
