01-Feb-10 - Karol Doherty Honoured at Donegal Sports Star Awards

Carndonagh based athlete Karol Doherty was honored at the Donegal Sport Star Awards on Friday night last for his impressive range of performances in 2009.  Doherty was a popular winner of the para-athlete category which recognized his convincing win in the Dublin City marathon last October in his pedal cycle in a new course of 1 hour and 30 minutes. Other notable performances for Karol included top three finishes in the Waterside and National half marathons and victories in the Lisnagalvin, Culdaff and Bay Road 5k races. Helena Crossan was nominated in the athletics category, while Clonmany based triple jumper Kieran Devlin was nominated in the best sports boy for secondary schools. Both received certificates for their nominations. Meanwhile, at the first annual Donegal Athletics Board presentation night at the Finn Valley Centre in Stranorlar on Saturday evening last, Helena Crossan was awarded the masters athlete of the year for 2009, while Kieran Devlin and Fergus Cox were recognized for their success in the juvenile ranks.

 

James Browne, Joe Mc Kinney and Finbarr Gallagher raced well at the Ulster and Northern Ireland Junior and Masters cross-country championships in Stranorlar on Saturday last. On Sunday last, Culdaff runner Martin Mooney finished the 5k School Run in Athenry, Co. Galway in 19 minutes and 50 seconds.

 

Aine Bradley, Niall Fogarty, Declan Donaghy and David Mc Laughlin will compete at the Ulster and Northern indoor track & field championships at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast this Saturday.
