13-Jul-09 - Fifth Place Finish for Inishowen Athletes at All-Irelands

Posted Date: 05-Aug-2009 Wednes

Fergus Cox and Darragh Kelly were the best placed finishers from Inishowen Athletics Club at the All-Ireland juvenile track and field championships in Tullamore on Sunday last. Fergus achieved a personal best in the under 13 boys javelin with a throw of 23.91m to place fifth overall. Darragh also finished fifth in the under 12 boys high jump in a life time best performance of 1.25m. The Moville athlete was extremely unlucky not to win a bronze medal for his efforts as his jump equaled that of the third place finisher. However, Darragh was just edged out of a medal on count back as he jumped 1.25 on his second attempt, while the third place finisher achieved this height on his first attempt. Declan Donaghy raced well in the heats of the under 14 boys 800m. Stephen Friel ran 59.09 in the heats of the under 17 boys 400m. Unfortunately, neither athlete progressed to their respective finals but will have gained considerable experience for competing at national level. Kieran Devlin rounded off his season with 11.36m in the under 17 boys triple jump.

James Browne was the leading Inishowen A.C. finisher in the J.G Memorial 4.2 mile road race in Cranford on Friday evening last. The St. Johnston athlete finished third overall in 23 minutes and 57 seconds. Helena Crossan was first senior woman in 25.48, with Georgina Dixon taking second place in 37.42. Breege Collins followed her win in the Carndonagh 5km with another victory in the masters section in 32.46. Mickey Collins was just outside the 30 minute barrier in 30.01, while Brendan Duffy took third in the V4 masters section in 31.09.
