Plans
are well underway for the third annual Culdaff 5km and juvenile
1 mile road races on Friday 15th May. There will be € 100
on offer for the first male athlete to break the course record
of 16.36 set by Declan Mc Carthy in 2007. A further € 50
is up for grabs if the record breaker can get under 15 minutes
and 40 seconds. Similarly, the first female athlete to break the
course record of 18.14 set by Helena Crossan in 2007 will receive
€ 100 also with a further € 50 on offer for the first
woman to break 17 minutes and 30 seconds. There will be the usual
prizes for all age group categories in both the 5km and juvenile
1 mile, with all finishers receiving a goody bag for their efforts.
Children must be aged between 11 and 16 years of age to participate
in the 1 mile road race with medals awarded to the first three
boys and girls in the under 13, 15 and 17 age categories. The
action gets underway at 7.30 pm with the juvenile 1 mile, while
the 5km is set for 7.45. All levels of walkers, joggers and runners
are very welcome to take part. Registration is from 6.00 pm in
the Hall in Culdaff. Elsewhere the Donegal Grand Prix gets underway
on Sunday 3rd May with the North West 10km at 3.00 pm in Letterkenny.
Buncrana based athlete,
Owenie Mc Kinney raced to a solid 11 minutes and 14 seconds in
the Letterkenny A.C organized 3km road race on Sunday last. Mc
Kinney was just three seconds shy of his personal best set in
last year’s event and took included the race as part of
a 60 mile training cycle. Theresa Doherty was well placed amongst
the 86 finishers with 11 minutes and 50 seconds. The Fit for Life
and senior training continues this Tuesday from the Buncrana Leisure
Centre at 6.30 pm.
