James
Browne was a convincing winner of the men’s novice race
at the Donegal novice cross-country championships at Fintra on
the outskirts of Killybegs on Sunday last. The St. Johnston based
runner was always to the fore over the 6k distance and gradually
pulled away from the chasing pack after the midway point to come
home unchallenged for his first individual County title. In the
process, he led Inishowen to silver medals in the team race with
Paddy Doherty racing well for 6th place, with Finbarr Gallagher
just three places further back in ninth. Owenie Mc Kinney completed
the scoring team with a very creditable sixteenth place finish
despite having to run an extra lap. Mickey Donaghy displayed reserves
of strength in the latter stages, getting 18th place, with the
improving Gerry Doyle 20th. Michael Collins came through quickly
in the final 2k and finished comfortably in 25th position. Laura
Gourley performed well in the women’s 3k race to clinch
fifth place overall. Breege Collins was just one place behind
in 7th. With both ladies inside the top 10, it was disappointing
that Inishowen could not field a full team to get at least silver
medals on the day.
