09-Mar-09 -Inishowen Athletes Qualify for UK Sportshall Finals

Posted Date: 10-Mar-2009 Tues

Aine Bradley from Clonmany and David Mc Laughlin from Rashenny will be competing in the UK sportshall finals in Birmingham next month following their impressive performances that propelled their under 13 County teams to victory in the Ulster finals on Thursday last. Unfortunately, the girls under 15 team which included Kayla Farran and Nuala Bradley missed out on qualification as did Stephen Friel who was on the boys’ team.

Karen Crossan raced to an excellent 12th place finish at the Irish University cross-country championships at the Jordanstown campus on Saturday last. The second year Dublin City University physical education and biology student was fifth scorer on her team which won the overall title. Crossan ran the opening 2km conservatively and worked her way through the field to finish the 5k race comfortably inside the top 15 and guarantee herself selection for the international university race in Cardiff on the 28th March.

The magnificent indoor arena in Magherafelt will be the venue this Saturday for the second round of the Ulster and Northern Ireland age group indoor track and field championships. Ethan O’ Kane will compete in the under 12 boys 60m and long jump, while Darragh Kelly goes in the high jump, long jump and 60m. In the under 13 girls’ competition, Aine Bradley will compete in the 60m, 600m, and long jump. Patrick Mathews will race in the under 16 boys 1500m. Ballyliffin athlete and bronze medalist in last year’s 400m, Conor Collins will attempt a sprint double over 200 and 400m in the under 19 age group.

The first major road race of the season for many of the Club’s senior athletes will be at Omagh half marathon on Saturday 21st March. The annual Club presentation night for post-primary and senior athletes will take place on Friday 13th March at 8.00 pm in the Inishowen Gateway Hotel in Buncrana. Training for all juveniles in the Buncrana area continues this Wednesday at the Leisure Centre from 7.00 – 8.00 pm. The Fit for Life and senior training continues every Tuesday from the Buncrana Leisure Centre at 6.30 pm. Training for post-primary school athletes takes place every Thursday also in Carndonagh Community School from 3.20-4.45.
