Karen
Crossan was the leading Inishowen runner at the Donegal senior
cross-country championships in Stranorlar on Sunday last when
she finished a gallant second in the senior women’s race.
The DCU student displayed reserves of strength in the final 1km
by moving from fourth to second. Helena Crossan was also in the
mix for what proved to be an exciting battle for the medals having
held second place for much of the 5k race. In the end, Helena
finished a fine fourth, with the title going to long time leader
Teresa Mc Gloin from Finn Valley. Cathriona Devine, also from
Finn Valley was third. Elizabeth Mc Daid came through the field
steadily to take 10th, with the ever improving Laura Gourley completing
the scoring team in 16th place. The consistent Breege Collins
ran a well paced race to finish 19th in what proved to be a difficult
day for cross-country running with all athletes battling against
the heavy rain. With these performances, Inishowen’ women’s
team finished a very creditable second on 32 points. Finn Valley
took gold on 17 points, with Tir Chonaill taking the bronze medals.
Evelyn Mc Ginley was prominent for much of the race and was in
seventh place as she entered the final lap. Unfortunately, the
Buncrana based runner was forced to withdraw due to illness, bit
will no doubt be back in action shortly.
